Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar packed
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 2 eggs large
  • 1 tablespoon honey plus more for glazing
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1–2 teaspoons browning optional

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or Spoon
  • Rubber spatula
  • 7×10 inch baking pan
  • Pastry brush

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 7×10 inch baking pan well so the honey bun does not stick.
  2. In one bowl, add the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir slowly and break up all sugar lumps until smooth.
  3. In another bowl, whisk the eggs, honey, molasses, and melted butter until the mixture looks dark and shiny.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry bowl. Stir slowly just until the batter comes together. Do not overmix. The batter should be thick and sticky.
  5. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. While the bun is still warm, brush the top with honey to make a shiny, sticky glaze. Let it cool before cutting into squares.

Notes

Belizean honey buns taste even better the next day after the flavors rest together. Do not overbake, or the bun may turn dry. For darker color, add more molasses or a small drop of browning.
